Sanctuary inside. Escalante outside.
Barrio Escalante is San José’s café-and-culture neighborhood — museums, a food hall, cafecitos and little corners worth the detour. Here’s where we’d start.
Ideas, not bookings: Casa Pandora doesn’t sell tours. Places come from our 2024 neighborhood map and our Instagram guides — opening hours and prices change, so check before you go.
Cafecitos, bites & a food hall
Escalante is the city’s eating neighborhood — the house is also close to supermarkets, and the shared kitchen is there when you’d rather cook. These are the spots on the map we drew for guests:
- Pandeli Coffee
- 5ta Calle Mercado Gastronómico Food
- Apotecario Food
- Isolina Food
- Soberanos Food
- Franco Food
- Árbol de Seda Food
- Garden House Food
- Delirio House Drinks
- Neon Ice Drinks
- Casa Baula Drinks
- Fresh Market Groceries
Casa Pandora’s own illustrated map of Barrio Escalante (2024). Casa Pandora is at the bottom, by Avenida 1 and Calle 33.
Culture within walking distance
Museo Dr. Rafael Ángel Calderón Guardia
A historic house in Barrio Escalante that preserves the legacy of former president Rafael Ángel Calderón Guardia, whose administration introduced major social reforms — including the creation of Costa Rica’s social security system and the Labor Code. Today it also hosts art exhibitions and cultural activities.
Opening days differ between sources (our Oct 2026 post vs. the Ministry of Culture listing) — check the official listing before you go.
Also on our map: the Centro Cultural España, the Antigua Aduana, the Compañía Nacional de Teatro, Cine Magaly and Parque Francia for a pause in the shade.

Getting around, safely and simply
Straight from our guide for girls getting around San José:
-
Ride apps or authorized taxis
Uber and DiDi show the route and price up front and let you share your trip. Authorized taxis are the alternative — and the safest choice at night.
-
Buses with Moovit
City buses are cheap and go almost everywhere. The free Moovit app tells you which bus to take and where to get off. Carry cash — most buses don’t take cards.
-
Walk by day, stay alert
Barrio Escalante and the center are pleasant on foot in daylight. Avoid isolated streets after dark, keep your phone and bag close, and when in doubt, take a ride.
-
The urban train stop
Our map marks an urban-train stop (Parada Tren Urbano) just north of the house, by Avenida 3. Check current schedules before you rely on it.

From the airport
Juan Santamaría International (SJO) is San José’s main airport. You can pre-book a pickup through Welcome Pickups — the partner linked from Casa Pandora’s website — or ask us for a quote on WhatsApp. Nothing is guaranteed until it’s confirmed.
Trade the city for crater views
Some of Costa Rica’s volcanoes are close enough to San José for a day trip. These are independent ideas — Casa Pandora doesn’t sell or run tours. Tickets and access are managed by SINAC, the national parks system; parks can close for volcanic activity, so check status and book there first.
- Independent day trip · not sold by Casa Pandora
Volcán Irazú
Cartago Province
Costa Rica’s highest volcano. On a clear day the summit views are huge, and you can explore the main crater area.
